One Vibrator Per Teen: Changing A Teenager’s Life, One Sex Toy at a Time.

To get sex toys when I was a teenager, I had to break the law. Like all teenagers, I was obsessed with sex. Unlike all teenagers, I was obsessed with sex toys and would tromp into sex-toy stores just to gaze at the bizarre dildo packaging. This being the late 1990s, shopping online wasn’t an option. So I went to brick-and-mortar stores for my dildo fix. The only problem was that I was 16, and the minimum age was 18. So every time I went into the Adult Fun Shop, I was afraid that I’d get kicked out. Even its name reminded me that I wasn’t welcome. That added to the thrill, of course, but it also made me think that exploring my sexual desires was illegal, which leads me to my proposal (actually it was my boyfriend’s idea) that all adolescent girls should be eligible to receive a free vibrator when they turn 13.

Here’s how the One Vibrator Per Teen program would work:

When a girl turns 13, she would be eligible to sign up for the One Vibrator Per Teen program via a website, which would feature information on masturbation, sexual health, contraception, and all the other things you need to know when you develop breasts and pubic hair. A week later, a phthalate-free rechargeable silicone vibrator clothed in discreet packaging would arrive at her home, packaged with water-based lubricant and an informational booklet.

Not only would teenage girls benefit from this program, but sex-toy companies would also profit from the early brand recognition. Gaining brand loyalty by giving away swag to hormonal girls is a time-worn strategy. For decades the feminine-hygiene company Kimberly-Clark has offered free sex-education materials to teachers in an attempt to get their maxi pads in the hands of as many new menstruators as possible, so why shouldn’t Trojan also get in the game?

Why We Need One Vibrator Per Teen:

1. Teenagers Need a Safe Sexual Outlet. Adolescence is a natural period of hypersexuality. Teenage girls are raging with hormones, but they’re told not to have sex, that sex is fraught with peril, that it results in babies or STIs or worse: MTV reality shows about their babies and STIs. But masturbation carries none of these risks.

2. Buying Sex Toys is Either Illegal or Impractical for Most Teenagers.

Even though teenagers could possibly purchase sex toys online, this usually requires a credit card, which most teenagers don’t have. It’s unrealistic to expect parents to purchase vibrators for their children because they don’t want to think of their kids masturbating. And even if a teenager does have a mother willing to purchase a sex toy for her, it’s unlikely that she would take her mother up on the offer. Being seen in public with your mother is embarrassing enough when you’re a teenager. Being spotted purchasing faux penises with her is the type of experience you’d never live down.

3. Vibrators Can Teach Adolescents How to Have Orgasms, Something Many Women Don’t Learn to Do Until Much Later in Life.

When I worked as a sex-toy saleswoman, many of my customers had never had orgasms. Some told me that they had their first orgasms in their 30s after purchasing a vibrator.  That a woman wouldn’t have an orgasm until that late in life is sad, but not that surprising, given that so many women report having sexual problems. Early vibrator use could prevent later sexual issues, as research that shows that vibrator use is correlated with positive sexual function, including higher levels of desire, arousal, and lubrication.

4. One Vibrator Per Teen Fits Into a Tradition of Coming-of-Age Rituals:  All cultures have traditions celebrating the onset of female puberty. We’re familiar with many of them: Bat Mitzvahs, Quinceaneras, period parties. So why not celebrate the upside of fertility with a gift to the clitoris?

Nineteen years ago Jocelyn Elders was fired as surgeon general for suggesting we promote masturbation as a way to prevent AIDS. She was ahead of her time. Pretending that teenagers aren’t constantly horny doesn’t change the truth that they are. We have the highest rates of teenage pregnancy of any developed country. Nearly a quarter of our teenagers have STIs. Directing teenagers to safe sexual activity is the best hope we have of promoting healthy sexual behavior. Giving teenagers free vibrators wouldn’t solve these problems, but it’s a start. If you want to stop teenagers from having sex with each other, you have to show them a way to have sex with themselves. And an abstinence ring is not that way. —Hallie Lieberman
